Alejandro Betancourt Lopez has become well-known after investing in various successful ventures, one of which includes Hawkers sunglasses. This is a popular iconic Spanish brand that is trending all over the world due to affordable prices and eco-friendly designs. Alejandro Betancourt attended Suffolk University and obtained a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration. He started his career at an international corporation known as Guruceaga Group. Betancourt has also worked for the drilling technology and oil exploration company, ICC-OEOC, and served as director at BGB Energy.
In early 2016, Betancourt decided to invest in Hawkers with an initial amount of approximately $56 million. Some of this amount included investments from Hugo Arévalo and Félix Ruiz; social networking app entrepreneurs who were integral in scaling up the company. Hawkers was founded by four people: Alex Moreno, Iñaki Soriano, Pablo Sanchez Lozano, and David Moreno. This was after Alex had traveled to the U.S. for studies and returned with a pair of Knockaround’s sunglasses. The four decided to join forces and start their own brand, Hawkers.
Hawkers was very successful when it came to social media marketing. By marketing on Facebook, the company brought competition to even large corporations such as Ray-Ban. The company was even used as a case study by Twitter to show how effective its platform was, with regards to marketing. Due to financial difficulties arising from customer service policies, back-ordering, and manufacturing costs, the four investors requested Alejandro Betancourt to become the president of Hawkers. In turn, Betancourt brought in Nacho Puig, a strategic planning and branding expert, to serve as the CEO.
Alejandro Betancourt came with a new marketing strategy that focused on using social media influencers. Most of these influencers were students already using the company’s products, and he tempted them with incentives such as plane tickets, festival and concert tickets, rather than using cash. The strategy enabled the company to expand its global presence to areas such as North America, Asia, and Europe. With over 6.6 million followers on Facebook, 1.6 million followers on Instagram, as well as numerous other followers on Reddit, Pinterest, and YouTube, Hawkers has become one of the most popular brands in the world.
